Professor: To illustrate functional fixedness, imagine a scenario where you need to hang a picture on a wall, but you don't have a hammer. Most people immediately think of using a hammer because that's its typical function. However, a shoe could serve as a substitute for pounding the nail. Yet, many individuals overlook this option because shoes are traditionally worn on feet, not used as tools. In a classic experiment, participants were given a box of tacks, a candle, and matches, and asked to attach the candle to a wall. Those who saw the tacks inside the box struggled because they viewed the box only as a container, not as a platform. But when the box was emptied and presented separately, participants easily used it as a shelf. This demonstrates how fixedness blocks creative solutions until we reframe the object's purpose.
