The concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to the tendency of individuals to perceive objects only in terms of their typical or intended use, which limits their ability to imagine alternative functions. This cognitive bias can hinder problem-solving because people fail to see novel ways to utilize familiar items. Overcoming functional fixedness often requires a shift in perspective or creative thinking, allowing one to break free from conventional associations and explore new possibilities.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from a psychology study. Participants were given a box of tacks, a candle, and a book of matches. They were asked to attach the candle to a wall so that it would burn properly without dripping wax on the floor. Many struggled. They tried to nail the candle directly to the wall or melt it with matches, but nothing worked. The solution was to use the box as a candle holder – tack the empty box to the wall, then place the candle inside it. The problem was that participants saw the box only as a container for tacks, not as a potential platform. Once they realized the box could serve a different role, they solved it easily. This illustrates functional fixedness – the box’s typical function blinded them to its alternative use.
