Social loafing is a phenomenon in which individuals exert less effort when working in a group than when working alone. This reduction in motivation occurs because people feel their individual contributions are less identifiable or less critical to the overall outcome. Social loafing is more likely to occur in large groups, when tasks are simple or repetitive, and when group members do not feel personally accountable for the final product. Understanding this concept is important for designing effective teamwork strategies.

Professor: So, let me give you a classic example. In a psychology study, researchers asked participants to clap or shout as loudly as possible. First, each person did it alone, and then they did it in groups of two, four, and six. When people thought they were clapping alone, they produced about 80 decibels of sound. But in groups of two, the average per person dropped to about 72 decibels. In groups of four, it fell to about 66 decibels, and in groups of six, it was only about 63 decibels per person. So, the larger the group, the quieter each individual clapped. Interestingly, when participants were blindfolded and told they were in a large group but actually clapped alone, their output was much stronger—close to their solo levels. This shows that people reduce effort when they believe others are also contributing, because they feel less personally responsible for the overall noise.
