📖 Texto de lectura

Social loafing is the tendency for individuals to exert less effort when working in a group than when working alone. This phenomenon occurs because individuals feel their contributions are less identifiable and less critical to the overall outcome. As group size increases, personal responsibility diminishes, leading to reduced motivation and effort. Researchers have observed social loafing in various settings, from physical tasks like rope pulling to cognitive tasks like brainstorming. Understanding this concept is important for designing effective teamwork strategies that minimize free-riding and maximize each member's engagement.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from a study. Researchers asked participants to clap or shout as loudly as possible. First, they did this alone, and then in groups of two, four, and six. When people thought they were clapping alone, they produced about three times more sound than when they believed they were clapping in a group. But here's the twist—when individuals were blindfolded and told they were in a group of six, even though they were actually alone, their output dropped to the same level as real group clapping. Why? Because they felt their effort was unidentifiable and not needed. They assumed others would compensate, so they held back. This clearly shows that the perception of being in a group, not the actual presence of others, triggers social loafing.
