📖 Reading Passage

The concept of 'niche construction' refers to the process by which organisms actively modify their environment, thereby influencing their own evolution and that of other species. Unlike passive adaptation to existing conditions, niche construction highlights how organisms are not just products of their environment but also agents that shape it. This can create feedback loops, where environmental changes affect natural selection pressures, leading to further adaptations. Ecologists study niche construction to understand species interactions, ecosystem dynamics, and the evolutionary consequences of organism-driven environmental changes.

🎧 Listening Lecture

Professor: Today, let's talk about niche construction using a classic example—the beaver. Beavers build dams across streams, which flood the surrounding area, creating ponds and wetlands. This dramatically changes the local environment. The pond provides a safe habitat for beavers, protecting them from predators, and allows them to store food underwater. But the changes don't stop there. The new wetland attracts different species—insects, fish, birds, and plants that thrive in aquatic conditions. Over time, the pond alters soil composition and water flow, affecting the entire ecosystem. Importantly, these environmental changes also exert new selective pressures on beavers themselves. For instance, beavers in areas with abundant building materials may evolve better dam-building skills, while those in resource-scarce areas adapt differently. So, the beaver's activity doesn't just adapt to the environment; it actively constructs a niche that influences its own evolution and the whole community.
❓ Question Using the example of the beaver from the lecture, explain the concept of niche construction.
