This phenomenon highlights how environmental factors, such as limited space, can trigger psychological and social dysfunction, even when basic resources like food and water are abundant.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from an experiment with rats. In the 1960s, researcher John Calhoun created a 'rat utopia'—a large enclosure with plenty of food, water, and nesting material, but no predators. The population grew rapidly, and soon the enclosure became overcrowded. As density increased, social chaos emerged. Some male rats became hyper-aggressive, attacking others without reason. Others became passive and withdrew, refusing to mate or defend territory. Female rats neglected their pups, and some even abandoned them. Eventually, the colony's birth rate dropped, and many rats died, even though food and space were still available. This shows how overcrowding itself, not resource scarcity, caused the breakdown of normal social behavior.
