The concept of 'behavioral momentum' refers to the tendency of a behavior to persist when it has been reinforced consistently over time, even when conditions change. Just as physical momentum keeps an object moving in the same direction unless a force acts on it, behavioral momentum suggests that established habits are resistant to disruption. When a behavior has a high rate of reinforcement, it becomes more likely to continue despite interruptions or changes in the environment. This idea helps explain why some habits are hard to break and why certain routines remain stable even under stress or new circumstances.

Professor: Let me give you an example from a study with rats. In the experiment, rats were trained to press a lever to get food. For one group, every press produced a food pellet—so reinforcement was continuous. For another group, food came only occasionally, say every fifth press. Both groups learned to press the lever. Then, the researchers introduced a distraction: they played a loud noise and also briefly turned off the lights. The rats that had been reinforced every time stopped pressing almost immediately when the noise started. But the rats that had been reinforced only every fifth press kept pressing through the noise and even when the lights flickered. Why? Because their behavior had stronger 'momentum'—it had been built on a more consistent schedule of reinforcement, making it more resistant to disruption. So the partial reinforcement created a stronger, more persistent habit.
❓ Câu hỏi Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral momentum.
