📖 阅读材料

In biology, organisms often develop specialized traits to survive in competitive environments. One such concept is 'niche partitioning,' where species that share a habitat reduce direct competition by using resources differently. This allows multiple species to coexist by dividing the available resources—such as food, space, or time—so that each species has its own unique ecological role. Niche partitioning can occur through differences in diet, activity patterns, or physical adaptations, ultimately enhancing biodiversity.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from a tropical rainforest. Consider three species of bats that all feed on fruit in the same area. At first glance, they seem to compete for the same food. But if you observe closely, you'll see they don't actually conflict. One species, the short-nosed bat, feeds on figs that grow high in the canopy. Another, the long-tongued bat, prefers nectar from flowers that bloom only at night. And a third species—the fishing bat—actually hunts for small fish near the river at dusk. So they all use the same general habitat—the forest—but they've divided their feeding times and food sources. The short-nosed bat is active in the morning, the long-tongued bat at night, and the fishing bat in the evening. This way, each bat has its own niche, and they avoid competing directly, which allows all three to thrive in the same forest.
❓ 问题 Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of niche partitioning.
