The concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used, thereby hindering creative problem-solving. When individuals encounter a problem, they often fail to see alternative functions for familiar objects because their minds are 'fixed' on the object's typical purpose. This mental block can prevent them from finding novel solutions, even when the environment provides sufficient resources. Overcoming functional fixedness requires a flexible mindset that allows for unconventional uses of everyday items.

Professor: Now, let me give you a classic example from a psychology experiment. Participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches, and asked to attach the candle to the wall so that it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many participants tried to melt the candle and stick it to the wall, or use the thumbtacks to pin the candle directly—but none of these worked. They failed because they saw the box only as a container for the thumbtacks, not as a potential platform. The solution was to empty the box, tack it to the wall, and place the candle inside it. Those who succeeded were able to break free from functional fixedness by reimagining the box's role. So, once they saw the box as a holder, not just a package, they solved the problem easily.
