In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing alternative uses for familiar objects, thereby hindering problem-solving and creativity. Functional fixedness often arises from past experiences and learned schemas, which make it difficult to perceive novel functions for common items. Overcoming this bias requires conscious effort to think beyond conventional purposes.

Professor: Let me illustrate functional fixedness with a classic experiment. Participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches, and asked to attach the candle to a wall so it could burn without dripping wax. Many struggled because they tried to tack the candle directly to the wall or melt wax to stick it. The solution, however, was to empty the thumbtack box, tack it to the wall as a shelf, and place the candle inside. The participants failed because they saw the box only as a container for thumbtacks, not as a potential platform. This shows how functional fixedness—seeing the box solely in its usual role—blocked their creative problem-solving. Once they mentally freed the box from its standard function, the solution became obvious.
