In biology, the concept of 'behavioral thermoregulation' refers to the deliberate actions animals take to regulate their body temperature by moving to or selecting environments with favorable temperatures. Unlike physiological mechanisms, such as sweating or shivering, behavioral thermoregulation involves conscious or instinctive choices. This strategy is crucial for survival because maintaining an optimal body temperature allows animals to carry out essential functions like hunting, escaping predators, and reproducing. Examples include seeking shade on hot days or basking in sunlight when cold.

Professor: Let me give you a clear example from a study on lizards in the desert. These lizards are ectothermic, meaning they depend on external heat. In the morning, when it’s cool, they lie on sun-warmed rocks to raise their body temperature. This allows them to become active and search for insects. But by midday, the sand gets extremely hot—over 50 degrees Celsius. If the lizards stayed on the surface, they would overheat and risk death. So, they burrow into the sand or hide under rocks, where it’s cooler. This way, they avoid lethal temperatures. As the afternoon cools, they come out again to feed. So, by moving between hot and cool areas throughout the day, they maintain a body temperature that’s just right for their activities. This is a perfect example of behavioral thermoregulation.
❓ 问题 Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral thermoregulation.
