In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to the tendency to perceive an object only in terms of its most common use, thereby limiting the ability to imagine alternative functions. This cognitive bias prevents individuals from solving problems creatively because they become 'fixed' on the conventional purpose of an item. Overcoming functional fixedness often requires a deliberate shift in perspective, allowing one to see beyond typical associations and discover novel solutions.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from a study. Participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches, and asked to attach the candle to a wall so it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many struggled. The obvious solution—using the thumbtacks to pin the candle directly—failed because the candle was too thick. Some tried melting wax with the matches, but that didn't hold. The key was to realize that the box itself could serve as a platform. By emptying the box, tacking it to the wall, and placing the candle inside, the problem was solved. Those who saw the box only as a container for tacks suffered from functional fixedness. But participants who thought of the box as a potential shelf—a novel function—succeeded. This demonstrates how breaking mental set leads to creative problem-solving.
❓ Pregunta Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
