📖 Reading Passage

In biology, the term 'behavioral adaptation' refers to an action or series of actions that an organism performs to increase its chances of survival and reproduction in its environment. Unlike physical adaptations, which are structural features, behavioral adaptations are learned or instinctive responses to specific environmental challenges. These behaviors can include migration, mating rituals, hunting strategies, or protective responses. Behavioral adaptations often arise through natural selection, as individuals with beneficial behaviors are more likely to survive and pass on their genes.

Professor: So, let me give you a concrete example of a behavioral adaptation. Consider the arctic fox. In winter, when food is scarce, the arctic fox follows polar bears across the ice. When a polar bear kills a seal, it eats its fill and then leaves the carcass. The arctic fox, which is much smaller, waits at a safe distance until the bear has finished, then it approaches to scavenge the remaining meat. This is a learned behavior—foxes observe and remember where bears hunt, and they time their approach carefully to avoid danger. This scavenging strategy is not just a random act; it’s a deliberate behavior that increases the fox’s chances of finding food in a harsh, frozen environment. Without this adaptation, the fox would struggle to survive the winter months.
❓ Question Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral adaptation.
