TOEFL Speaking Task 3

In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in its traditional or intended way. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing alternative uses for familiar items, thereby hindering creative problem-solving. When faced with a challenge, people often overlook novel solutions because they are anchored to the object's typical function. Overcoming functional fixedness requires actively reimagining the potential purposes of everyday objects.

Professor: Let me illustrate this with a classic experiment. Participants were given a box of tacks, a candle, and a book of matches. Their task was to attach the candle to the wall so that it could burn without dripping wax onto the floor. Many people tried nailing the candle directly to the wall or melting wax to stick it, but these failed. The solution was to empty the tack box, use the tacks to nail the box to the wall, and place the candle inside it. However, those who received the tacks already inside the box struggled because they saw the box only as a container for tacks, not as a potential shelf. In contrast, when the tacks were presented separately from the box, participants solved the problem much faster. This shows how functional fixedness—seeing the box only as a tack holder—blocked creative thinking.
