📖 Reading Passage

In psychology, the concept of 'cognitive dissonance' refers to the mental discomfort experienced when a person holds two or more contradictory beliefs, values, or attitudes, or when their behavior conflicts with their beliefs. To reduce this discomfort, individuals often change their beliefs, justify their behavior, or seek information that supports their actions while ignoring conflicting evidence. This mechanism helps maintain internal consistency and self-image.

🎧 Listening Lecture

Professor: Let me give you a classic example. A student, Sarah, is a strong advocate for environmental protection. She believes that reducing plastic waste is crucial for the planet. However, one day, she forgets her reusable bag and, in a hurry, buys a bottled water and a plastic-wrapped sandwich. Later, she feels uneasy about her choice. To ease this discomfort, she tells herself, 'Well, the store doesn't recycle, but at least I'm not driving a gas-guzzling car.' She then reads an article that claims plastic bottles are actually recycled more often than people think, and she starts sharing that article with friends. Notice how she changed her belief about plastic recycling and sought external validation rather than changing her behavior.
❓ Question Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of cognitive dissonance.
