📖 Reading Passage

Behavioral scripts are cognitive frameworks that guide individuals through familiar social situations by outlining expected sequences of actions. According to research, scripts reduce uncertainty and allow people to act automatically, without consciously deliberating each step. For example, a restaurant script typically includes entering, being seated, ordering, eating, paying, and leaving. Scripts become more detailed with repeated exposure, but they can also lead to errors when expectations are violated. Understanding scripts helps explain how people navigate routine interactions efficiently.

🎧 Listening Lecture

Professor: Now, consider how we often take scripts for granted. Let me give you an example from my own experience. Last week, I went to a new coffee shop near campus. I walked in, approached the counter, and waited to be served. But the barista just smiled and pointed to a tablet on the counter. I looked at it and saw a menu with a 'Order Here' button. I realized this shop required customers to place orders on the tablet, not with a person. I felt a bit flustered because my usual coffee shop script—talking to a barista, paying, then waiting—didn't apply. After a moment, I tapped my order and paid digitally. The coffee was ready at the end of the counter. This experience shows how a deviation from a standard script can disrupt our automatic behavior and force us to consciously adapt to a new set of steps.
❓ Question Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral scripts. How does the example illustrate the role of scripts in everyday social interactions?
