📖 Bài đọc

Social loafing is the tendency for individuals to exert less effort when working in a group than when working alone. This phenomenon occurs because individual contributions become less identifiable in a collective setting, reducing personal accountability and motivation. Social loafing can lower overall group productivity and is more likely in tasks where each member's output is not clearly measured. Researchers have studied this effect in various contexts, such as teamwork in workplaces, sports, and academic projects, to understand how group dynamics influence individual performance.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from a university study. Researchers asked students to clap and shout as loudly as possible, first alone, then in groups of two, four, and six. They measured the noise level per person. When alone, each student produced about 84 decibels. In a two-person group, each produced about 80 decibels. In a six-person group, the per-person output dropped to only 66 decibels. So, even though the total noise increased with more people, the individual effort clearly decreased. Interestingly, when the students were told that their individual output would be recorded, their effort in groups went back up to nearly the same level as when they performed alone. This shows that social loafing happens when people feel their personal contribution is hidden or not evaluated.
❓ Câu hỏi Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of social loafing.
