📖 เนื้อเรื่อง

In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing alternative uses for familiar objects, thereby hindering problem-solving. Functional fixedness often arises from past experiences and learned schemas, which create rigid associations between an object's form and its intended function. Overcoming this bias requires creative thinking and the ability to reframe the problem.

Professor: Let me illustrate this with a classic experiment. Participants were given a candle, a box of thumbtacks, and a book of matches, and were asked to attach the candle to a wall so that it could burn properly. Many struggled. The solution was to empty the thumbtack box, tack it to the wall, and use it as a platform for the candle. Some participants, however, saw the box only as a container for thumbtacks—that's functional fixedness. They couldn't think of using the box as a shelf. In another group, the thumbtacks were presented separately from the box, and participants solved the problem much more easily. Without the box's obvious 'container' function, they saw it as a potential support. This shows how our preconceived notions about an object's function can blind us to creative solutions.
❓ คำถาม Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
