📖 Bài đọc

In psychology, the term 'cognitive dissonance' refers to the mental discomfort experienced when a person holds two or more contradictory beliefs, values, or attitudes, especially when these contradictions relate to their own behavior. This discomfort often motivates individuals to reduce the inconsistency by changing their beliefs, adding new cognitions, or trivializing the conflict. For example, a person who values health but smokes may experience dissonance, leading them to either quit smoking or downplay the health risks.

Professor: So, let me give you a classic example. A student named Maria considered herself an environmentalist—she recycled, avoided plastic, and supported green policies. However, she also loved flying for vacations, which contributes significantly to carbon emissions. During a flight to Europe, she felt uneasy. To ease this discomfort, she didn't stop flying. Instead, she added a new belief: 'My individual impact is negligible compared to large corporations.' She also started buying carbon offsets, telling herself, 'I'm compensating for my footprint.' Later, she even argued that flying is sometimes necessary for cultural exchange. Notice how she reduced dissonance not by changing her behavior, but by changing her thoughts and adding justifications.
❓ Câu hỏi Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of cognitive dissonance.
