The concept of 'behavioral adaptation' refers to the way animals alter their actions or routines in response to environmental changes, thereby increasing their chances of survival. Unlike physical adaptations, which involve structural changes over generations, behavioral adaptations are often learned or instinctive and can occur within an individual's lifetime. These adaptations may involve changes in feeding habits, migration patterns, or social interactions, allowing organisms to cope with new challenges such as predators, climate shifts, or food scarcity.

Professor: So, let’s look at a real example. Consider the black-tailed prairie dog, a rodent that lives in grasslands. Normally, they forage during the day when it’s warm. But in areas where humans have introduced artificial lights near their colonies, the prairie dogs suddenly become more active at night. Why? Well, the lights attract insects, and also the lights may confuse predators like hawks that hunt by sight. By shifting their feeding to nighttime, the prairie dogs avoid daytime predators and take advantage of the insect abundance. This isn’t a genetic change; it’s a quick behavioral shift that individuals learn to make. Over time, the entire colony adopts this new pattern, even passing it on to their young. So, that’s a clear case of behavioral adaptation to a human-altered environment.
❓ Câu hỏi Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral adaptation.
