📖 Reading Passage

In biology, organisms often develop specialized traits to survive in their environments. One such concept is 'behavioral thermoregulation,' where animals actively adjust their body temperature by changing their behavior rather than relying solely on physiological mechanisms. This can include moving to sunlit or shaded areas, altering posture to expose or minimize skin surface, or changing activity times. Behavioral thermoregulation is crucial for ectotherms, like reptiles, which depend on external heat sources. By modulating behavior, they can maintain optimal body temperatures for essential activities like hunting and digestion, even in fluctuating environmental conditions.

🎧 Listening Lecture

Professor: Let me give you an example from a desert lizard species. In the early morning, the ground is cool, so the lizard basks on a sunlit rock, flattening its body to maximize heat absorption. As the day heats up, the rock becomes scorching. To avoid overheating, the lizard shifts to a shaded area under a bush and raises its body off the hot sand, allowing air to cool it. By midday, when temperatures peak, the lizard burrows into the sand, where it's cooler, and becomes inactive. Later, as the sun sets, it emerges again to hunt, using the remaining warmth of the sand. So, by moving between sun and shade, changing posture, and timing its activity, the lizard keeps its body temperature within a safe range without needing to sweat or shiver.
❓ Question Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral thermoregulation.
