In biology, the concept of 'behavioral adaptation' refers to an action or series of actions an organism performs that increases its chances of survival and reproduction. These behaviors are not learned but are genetically inherited, often arising through natural selection. Behavioral adaptations can include migration, mating rituals, or specific foraging techniques. They are distinct from physical adaptations, which involve body structures. Understanding these behaviors helps scientists predict how species respond to environmental challenges.

Professor: Let’s take the example of the Arctic tern. This bird migrates from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back every year—that’s about 70,000 kilometers. This migration is not taught by parents; it’s an inherited behavior that ensures the tern always has access to abundant food and suitable nesting conditions. By moving between hemispheres, the tern experiences two summers each year, maximizing its feeding time and reproductive success. Another example is the digger wasp. The female wasp digs a burrow, hunts a cricket, stings it to paralyze it, and lays an egg on it. This precise sequence is performed without any prior learning—it’s a fixed action pattern that ensures the larva has fresh food when it hatches. Both behaviors are innate and directly boost survival.
❓ 问题 Using the examples from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral adaptation.
