📖 Reading Passage

In biology, the concept of 'behavioral adaptation' refers to an action or series of actions that an organism performs to survive in its environment. Unlike physical adaptations, which are structural changes, behavioral adaptations are learned or instinctive responses that help an animal find food, avoid predators, or reproduce successfully. These behaviors often develop over generations through natural selection, as individuals with advantageous behaviors are more likely to survive and pass on their genes. For example, a species may develop a unique hunting technique or a migratory pattern that maximizes its chances of survival.

🎧 Listening Lecture

Professor: So, let’s look at a specific example of behavioral adaptation. Consider the green sea turtle. When they hatch on a beach, tiny turtles instinctively crawl toward the ocean. But here’s the interesting part—scientists found that the turtles use the light of the moon reflecting on the water to find their way. However, on beaches with artificial lights from nearby buildings, the hatchlings get confused and crawl toward the lights, often ending up on roads. Over time, in some populations, the turtles have adapted their behavior. They now wait until it’s darker, or they use the sound of the waves to navigate instead of relying solely on light. This change is not physical—it’s a learned, flexible response to a new environmental challenge. This behavioral adaptation has increased their survival rate on those beaches.
❓ Question Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral adaptation.
