Social loafing is a phenomenon in which individuals exert less effort when working in a group than when working alone. This occurs because people feel less personally accountable for the outcome and believe their contributions are less noticeable in a group setting. Social loafing can reduce overall group productivity and is more likely to occur when tasks are simple or when individual performance is not evaluated. Understanding this concept is important for designing effective teamwork strategies.

Professor: So, let me give you an example from my own experience. I once supervised a group of students working on a class project. They were supposed to come up with ideas for a recycling campaign. I divided them into teams of four. At first, I noticed that some students were not contributing much. They would sit quietly and let others do the talking. When I asked one of the quieter students why, he said, 'Well, my teammates are already covering the main points, so I don't need to say much.' That's classic social loafing. To fix this, I changed the task. I assigned each student a specific role, like researching statistics, designing posters, or contacting local businesses. I also told them that each person's part would be presented separately to the class. After that, everyone became more involved and put in more effort. The quality of the final presentation improved significantly.
