Professor: Today, let's look at functional fixedness through a classic experiment. Imagine you're in a room with a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches. Your task is to attach the candle to the wall so it can burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many people try to tack the candle directly to the wall, but it doesn't work. Others try to melt wax to stick the candle, but that fails too. The key is to use the box as a candle holder—tack the empty box to the wall, then place the candle inside. But most people miss this because they see the box only as a container for thumbtacks, not as a platform. In our study, when we presented the thumbtacks separately from the box, participants solved it quickly. When the box held the tacks, they struggled. This shows how the box's typical role blinded them to its alternative use.
