In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing alternative uses for familiar items, thereby hindering problem-solving. When faced with a novel challenge, people often fail to think creatively because they are anchored to the object's typical function. Overcoming functional fixedness requires a deliberate shift in perspective to recognize that objects can serve multiple purposes beyond their conventional roles.

Professor: So, let me give you a classic example from a study. Participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches, and asked to attach the candle to a wall so that it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many people tried tacking the candle directly to the wall, but that failed because the candle was too thick. Others tried melting the wax to stick it, but that also failed. The solution was to empty the thumbtack box, tack it to the wall as a small platform, and then place the candle on top of it. The problem was that people saw the box only as a container for thumbtacks, not as a potential shelf. This is functional fixedness—they couldn't see the box's alternative function. Once someone pointed out the box could be used as a platform, the solution became obvious. So, the key is to break away from the typical use of an object.
❓ 问题 Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
