In biology, the concept of 'behavioral adaptation' refers to an action or series of actions that an organism performs to increase its chances of survival and reproduction in its environment. Unlike physical adaptations, which are structural features of the body, behavioral adaptations are learned or instinctive responses to environmental challenges. These behaviors can include migration, hunting strategies, or social cooperation, and they often develop over generations through natural selection, helping species thrive in specific habitats.

Professor: So, let me give you a clear example of behavioral adaptation. Consider the sea otter, which lives in the cold coastal waters of the Pacific. To survive, sea otters have developed a behavior of using tools—specifically, they find a flat stone and place it on their belly while floating on their back. Then, they crack open hard-shelled prey like clams or sea urchins by pounding them against the stone. This behavior is not inherited physically but is learned—young otters watch their mothers and practice until they master it. This tool use allows them to access nutritious food that they wouldn't otherwise be able to eat, which greatly increases their chance of survival in a challenging environment. It’s a perfect example of how a behavioral action helps an organism adapt.
❓ 问题 Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral adaptation.
