In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to the tendency to perceive objects only in terms of their typical or intended use, which limits creative problem-solving. When faced with a novel challenge, individuals often fail to see alternative functions for familiar items because their minds are 'fixed' on conventional roles. Overcoming this cognitive bias requires actively reimagining an object's potential uses beyond its standard purpose. This phenomenon illustrates how prior knowledge can sometimes hinder, rather than help, our ability to find solutions.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from a study. Participants were asked to attach a candle to a wall so that it would burn properly. They were given a box of tacks, a book of matches, and the candle itself. Many people tried to tack the candle directly to the wall, but it kept falling. Others tried to melt wax and stick it, but that didn't work either. The solution? Empty the box of tacks, use the tacks to nail the empty box to the wall as a small shelf, and then place the candle on it. The problem was that participants saw the box only as a container for tacks—its typical function—and not as a potential platform. Once they realized the box could serve as a holder, they solved it easily. This shows functional fixedness in action.
