In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to the tendency to perceive objects only in terms of their most common or habitual use, which limits creative problem-solving. When people are confronted with a problem that requires using an object in an unconventional way, they often fail to see the alternative function because their mental representation of the object is rigidly tied to its typical purpose. Overcoming functional fixedness requires a cognitive shift to 'restructure' the problem and recognize novel affordances.

Professor: Let me give you a classic experiment. Participants were given a candle, a box of tacks, and a matchbox, and asked to attach the candle to a wall so it could burn properly. Most people initially tried to melt wax or tack the candle directly, but failed. The solution was to empty the tack box, tack it to the wall as a shelf, and place the candle inside. The key was that the box was not just a container for tacks but could serve as a platform. Another group, however, was given the tacks already spread on a table, not in the box. In that case, they solved the problem much faster because the box's typical function wasn't highlighted. This demonstrates functional fixedness: seeing the box only as a container blocked the insight to use it as a support.
