In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to the tendency to perceive objects only in terms of their typical or intended use, which limits creative problem-solving. When people are faced with a challenge, they often fail to see alternative functions for familiar items because their minds are 'fixed' on conventional roles. Overcoming functional fixedness requires cognitive flexibility, allowing individuals to repurpose objects in novel ways to achieve a goal.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from a study. Participants were asked to attach a candle to a wall so that it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. They were given a box of tacks, a book of matches, and a candle. Most people tried to tack the candle directly to the wall or melt wax to stick it, but both failed. The solution was to empty the tack box, tack it to the wall as a platform, and place the candle inside. The key was seeing the box not just as a container for tacks, but as a potential shelf. People who received the tacks already in the box struggled more than those who got the tacks separately, because the box's typical function—holding tacks—blocked their ability to see it as a support. Once they overcame that mental block, the solution was simple.
❓ 问题 Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
