📖 Bài đọc

The concept of 'learned helplessness' refers to a psychological state where an individual, after repeated exposure to uncontrollable negative events, comes to believe that they have no control over their environment, even when opportunities for control later become available. This learned belief often leads to passive behavior, reduced motivation, and an inability to recognize or act on potential escape routes or solutions. Learned helplessness was first demonstrated in animal studies, but it also applies to human situations, such as academic failure or workplace challenges.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example. In a study, dogs were placed in a shuttle box with two compartments. First, they received mild electric shocks, but they could not escape them no matter what they did—the door was locked. After several trials, the shocks stopped, and the door was opened. However, instead of jumping to the safe side, the dogs just lay down and whined, even though escape was now possible. They had learned that their actions didn't matter. Now, think about a student who repeatedly fails math tests despite studying hard. After many failures, the student might stop trying altogether, believing 'I'm just bad at math.' Even when a tutor offers help, the student might refuse, thinking it won't help. That's learned helplessness—giving up because past experiences taught them they have no control.
❓ Câu hỏi Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of learned helplessness.
