TOEFL Speaking Task 3

The concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from imagining alternative uses for familiar objects, thereby hindering problem-solving. When faced with a novel challenge, people often fail to see beyond an object's intended function, even when a creative solution is possible. Overcoming functional fixedness requires a deliberate shift in perspective, allowing the mind to explore unconventional applications.

Professor: Let me illustrate this with a classic experiment. Participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches, and were asked to attach the candle to a wall so it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Some participants were given the thumbtacks already removed from the box, while others received the box with the tacks inside. Those who saw the box as a container struggled—they tried tacking the candle directly to the wall, failing. But those who emptied the box immediately recognized it could serve as a platform. They tacked the box to the wall, placed the candle on it, and solved the problem. The first group was stuck because they saw the box only as a holder for tacks—a classic case of functional fixedness. The second group overcame it by reimagining the box’s purpose.
