In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing alternative uses for familiar objects, thereby hindering problem-solving and creativity. When faced with a novel challenge, people often fail to repurpose items because they are anchored to the object's original function. Overcoming functional fixedness requires a deliberate shift in perspective, allowing the mind to explore unconventional applications.

Professor: Today, let's look at a classic example. Imagine you have a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches, and your task is to attach the candle to a wall so that it can burn properly. Many people try to tack the candle directly to the wall or melt wax to stick it, but both fail. The solution? Empty the thumbtack box, tack it to the wall as a small shelf, and place the candle on top. Why did most people struggle? Because they saw the box only as a container for thumbtacks, not as a potential platform. That's functional fixedness. Once someone realizes the box can serve as a shelf, the problem is easily solved. This shows how breaking free from fixed ideas about an object's function can lead to creative solutions.
❓ Pregunta Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
