📖 Текст

In biology, the concept of 'behavioral thermoregulation' refers to the deliberate actions an animal takes to regulate its body temperature by moving to or choosing environments that provide optimal thermal conditions. Unlike physiological mechanisms, such as sweating or shivering, behavioral thermoregulation involves conscious or instinctive choices. This strategy is crucial for survival because maintaining an appropriate internal temperature allows animals to carry out essential activities like foraging, mating, and avoiding predators. Examples include basking in the sun to warm up or seeking shade to cool down.

Professor: Let me give you an example from a study on desert lizards. In the early morning, the desert floor is cool, and a lizard's body temperature is low, making it sluggish. To warm up, the lizard moves onto a sunlit rock and positions its body flat against the surface, maximizing exposure to the sun's rays. As the day progresses and the rock becomes extremely hot, the lizard would overheat if it stayed. So it shifts to a shaded area under a bush, or it lifts its body off the rock to allow cooler air to circulate underneath. By moving between sunny and shady spots throughout the day, the lizard keeps its body temperature within a narrow, optimal range, allowing it to hunt insects efficiently without overheating.
❓ Вопрос Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral thermoregulation.
