📖 Bài đọc

In psychology, the concept of 'cognitive dissonance' refers to the mental discomfort experienced when a person holds two or more contradictory beliefs, values, or attitudes. This discomfort often motivates individuals to reduce the inconsistency by changing their beliefs, adding new cognitions, or downplaying the importance of the conflicting idea. For example, a person who values health but smokes may experience dissonance. To resolve it, they might convince themselves that smoking helps them manage stress, thereby justifying the behavior.

🎧 Bài giảng

Professor: Today, let's look at cognitive dissonance in a real-life scenario. Imagine a student named Mark who considers himself an environmentalist. He always recycles and advocates for reducing plastic use. However, one day he buys a bottled water because he's in a hurry and forgets his reusable bottle. After drinking it, he feels uneasy—this is dissonance. To reduce the discomfort, he tells himself that the bottle is made from recycled plastic and will be recycled again, so it's not that harmful. He also thinks, 'I usually avoid plastic, so one bottle won't matter.' By rationalizing his action, Mark eases the tension between his identity as an environmentalist and his behavior. This example illustrates how people mentally adjust to align their actions with their self-image.
❓ Câu hỏi Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of cognitive dissonance and how Mark resolved it.
