In biology, the term 'commensalism' describes a symbiotic relationship between two species where one benefits and the other is neither helped nor harmed. Unlike mutualism, where both species gain, or parasitism, where one is harmed, commensalism involves a neutral effect on the host. The benefiting organism often gains shelter, transportation, or access to food resources that the host does not use. This concept helps scientists understand how species coexist in ecosystems without direct competition or conflict.

Professor: To illustrate commensalism, let's consider the relationship between cattle egrets and grazing cattle. Cattle egrets are small white birds that follow herds of cattle in fields. As the cattle walk and graze, they stir up insects from the grass. The egrets then swoop down and eat these insects. The cattle are completely unaffected—they don't lose any food, and the egrets don't harm them. The egrets benefit by getting an easy meal without expending energy to hunt. Meanwhile, the cattle continue grazing as if the birds weren't there. There's no cost to the cattle, and no gain either. This is a classic example of commensalism because only the egret gains, while the cattle remain neutral.
