The concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used, thereby hindering creative problem-solving. When faced with a challenge, individuals often fail to see alternative functions for familiar items because their mental representation of the object is fixed on its conventional purpose. This mental block can prevent efficient solutions, especially in unfamiliar situations. Overcoming functional fixedness requires a conscious effort to think beyond typical uses and to reassess the properties of objects in relation to the problem at hand.

Professor: Now, let me give you a classic example of functional fixedness from a psychology experiment. Participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a book of matches. Their task was to attach the candle to the wall so that it could burn without dripping wax onto the floor. Many people tried to tack the candle directly to the wall, but that failed because the candle was too thick. Others tried to melt the wax with matches and stick it to the wall, but that also failed because the wax didn't hold. The key solution was to empty the thumbtack box, tack the box to the wall, and then place the candle inside the box. But most participants couldn't see this because they viewed the box only as a container for thumbtacks. They were stuck in functional fixedness. Only when someone realized the box could serve as a platform did they solve the problem.
