📖 Bài đọc

The concept of 'cognitive dissonance' refers to the mental discomfort experienced when a person holds two conflicting beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors. According to social psychology, when individuals act in a way that contradicts their internal values, they feel a strong motivation to reduce this discomfort. They may do so by changing their behavior, altering their beliefs, or rationalizing the inconsistency. This process often occurs unconsciously and is a powerful driver of attitude change. A classic example involves a smoker who knows smoking is harmful yet continues to smoke, leading to dissonance that they resolve by downplaying the health risks.

🎧 Bài giảng

Professor: Today we'll look at a real-world example of cognitive dissonance. Consider a student named Mark who values honesty above all else. One weekend, he took a difficult exam and, despite his principles, he glanced at a neighbor's paper and copied two answers. Afterward, Mark felt a strong sense of unease. To reduce this dissonance, he didn't confess or change his behavior. Instead, he began to tell himself that the exam was unfair, and that everyone cheats sometimes. He also convinced himself that his action wasn't 'really' cheating because he only copied a few answers. Over time, Mark's belief in the importance of honesty weakened. He started justifying minor dishonesty in other situations, like lying about his homework. This illustrates how people alter their attitudes, not their actions, to resolve the mental conflict.
❓ Câu hỏi Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of cognitive dissonance.
