In sociology, the concept of "social loafing" refers to the tendency of individuals to exert less effort when working in a group than when working alone. This phenomenon occurs because individuals feel less accountable for the final outcome and perceive their personal contribution as dispensable. Social loafing is more likely in large groups where tasks are simple and individual performance is not easily observable. Understanding this concept helps explain variations in group productivity and highlights the importance of designing tasks to maximize individual engagement.

Professor: Today, let's look at a classic example from a study. Imagine a group of students asked to clap or cheer as loudly as possible. When they believed they were clapping alone, the noise level was high. However, when they thought they were part of a larger group, each person actually clapped less loudly. The researchers measured the sound output and found that as group size increased, the average sound per person dropped significantly. In another scenario, the same students were asked to pull a rope in a tug-of-war. When pulling alone, they used more strength. But when they pulled in a team of six, each individual pulled with only about half the force they used alone. These results show that people often reduce their effort when they feel their contribution is hidden within a group.
