In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from imagining alternative uses for familiar objects, thereby hindering creative problem-solving. When faced with a novel challenge, people often fail to see beyond an object's intended function, even if that object could serve a more effective purpose in the given situation.

Professor: Now, let me give you a classic example. In a famous experiment, participants were given a box of tacks, a candle, and a matchbox, and asked to attach the candle to the wall so that it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many participants tried to tack the candle directly to the wall or melt wax to stick it, but both failed. The solution was to empty the matchbox, tack it to the wall, and use it as a platform for the candle. However, most people couldn't see the matchbox as anything but a container for matches. That's functional fixedness. Interestingly, when the matches were presented separately from the box, participants solved the problem much faster because the box was no longer mentally 'fixed' as a match container.
