In behavioral ecology, the term "optimal foraging" refers to the idea that animals choose feeding strategies that maximize their net energy gain per unit of time spent foraging. This involves balancing the energy and time costs of searching, capturing, and handling food against the nutritional rewards. Animals are expected to prefer food items that offer the highest energy return relative to the effort, and to avoid those that are costly or low in benefit. The theory predicts that foraging decisions are shaped by natural selection to optimize efficiency under given environmental conditions.

Professor: Let me give you a classic example from a study on bluegill sunfish. These fish feed on small water fleas, but not all water fleas are equal in value. Large water fleas are more nutritious, but they're rarer and harder to catch because they move quickly. Small water fleas are abundant and easy to catch, but they provide very little energy. So the sunfish face a trade-off. In the experiment, when researchers offered both large and small fleas together, the sunfish selectively targeted the large ones, ignoring the small ones. However, when large fleas were scarce, the sunfish switched to feeding on small fleas, even though they were less profitable. The fish's choice matched the optimal foraging model: they went for the highest energy return when large prey was available, but when the cost of searching for large prey became too high, they settled for the less rewarding small prey. This shows how they balance energy gain against time and effort.
❓ Câu hỏi Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of optimal foraging.
