In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to the tendency to perceive objects only in terms of their most common or typical use, thereby limiting the ability to think of alternative functions. This cognitive bias can hinder problem-solving because individuals fail to see novel ways to utilize familiar items. Overcoming functional fixedness often requires deliberate cognitive restructuring, such as breaking an object into its component parts or considering its physical properties independently of its intended purpose. Research demonstrates that this bias is particularly strong in adults, whereas children may exhibit less rigidity due to less entrenched knowledge.

Professor: Let me illustrate this with a classic experiment. Participants were given a candle, a box of thumbtacks, and a book of matches, and were asked to attach the candle to a wall so that it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many struggled because they saw the box only as a container for thumbtacks. The solution required emptying the box, tacking it to the wall as a shelf, and placing the candle on it. Those who succeeded overcame functional fixedness by seeing the box as a potential platform. In another version, when the thumbtacks were presented separately from the box, participants solved it much faster because the box's typical function was less obvious. This shows how ingrained our assumptions can be.
❓ 문제 Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness and how it affects problem-solving.
