The concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used, thereby preventing them from seeing novel or alternative uses for that object. This mental block often hinders problem-solving because individuals fail to recognize that an object can serve multiple purposes beyond its intended function. Overcoming functional fixedness requires creative thinking and the ability to reframe the problem from a new perspective.

Professor: Now, let me give you an example from my own research. In a classic experiment, we gave participants a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a matchbox, and asked them to attach the candle to a wall so that it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many participants tried to nail the candle directly to the wall or melt the wax to stick it, but they failed. The solution was to use the empty matchbox as a platform—tack the box to the wall and place the candle inside it. However, most people couldn't see the matchbox as anything other than a container for matches. They were stuck because of functional fixedness. Interestingly, when we presented the matches outside the box, participants solved the problem much faster because they no longer saw the box solely as a match holder.
