In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to the tendency to perceive objects only in their typical or intended way, which limits creative problem-solving. When people are fixated on an object's conventional function, they often fail to see alternative uses, even when those alternatives could solve a novel problem. Overcoming functional fixedness requires a mental shift to consider objects beyond their usual roles, often leading to innovative solutions. This phenomenon highlights how prior knowledge and habitual thinking can hinder adaptability in unfamiliar situations.

Professor: Let me illustrate this with a classic experiment. Participants were given a box of thumbtacks, a candle, and a match, and asked to attach the candle to a wall so it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many struggled because they tried to tack the candle directly to the wall—impossible, since the candle was too thick. The solution required seeing the box not as a container for tacks, but as a platform. They emptied the box, tacked it to the wall, and placed the candle on top. Those who failed were fixated on the box's typical role—holding tacks. Once they broke that mental set, the answer was obvious. This demonstrates functional fixedness: the box's intended function blinded them to its potential as a candle holder.
❓ 问题 Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of functional fixedness.
