In biology, the term 'behavioral adaptation' refers to an action or series of actions that an organism performs to increase its chances of survival and reproduction in its specific environment. Unlike physical adaptations, which are structural features of the body, behavioral adaptations are learned or instinctive behaviors that help an animal respond to environmental challenges. These behaviors can include migration, hunting strategies, communication methods, or defensive tactics. Behavioral adaptations are crucial because they allow animals to cope with changes in their habitat, find food more efficiently, avoid predators, or successfully raise offspring. Essentially, they are the 'how-to' skills that animals develop over time to thrive in their ecological niche.

Professor: So, let me give you a concrete example from the marine world. Consider the sea otter. Sea otters live in cold coastal waters where food can be hard to find. They have a fascinating behavioral adaptation when feeding on hard-shelled prey like clams or abalone. Unlike many other marine mammals, sea otters don't have strong jaws to crack open shells. Instead, they use tools. They will dive down, pick up a clam and a rock, then float on their backs. They place the rock on their belly and repeatedly smash the clam against it until the shell breaks. This is not an instinctive behavior from birth; mother otters teach their pups how to do this by demonstrating and allowing them to practice. So, this learned tool use is a clear behavioral adaptation that enables them to access a food source that would otherwise be unavailable, thereby increasing their survival chances in a challenging environment.
❓ 问题 Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral adaptation.
