In biology, the concept of 'behavioral adaptation' refers to an action or series of actions that an organism performs to survive and reproduce in its environment. Unlike physical adaptations, which are structural, behavioral adaptations are learned or instinctive responses to environmental challenges. These behaviors can include migration, hibernation, or specific foraging techniques. They are crucial for an animal's survival, as they enable the organism to exploit resources, avoid predators, or cope with changing conditions. Behavioral adaptations often develop over generations through natural selection, favoring individuals that exhibit beneficial behaviors.

Professor: Let me give you a clear example. Consider the sea otter, a marine mammal that feeds on shellfish like clams and crabs. Sea otters have a clever behavioral adaptation: they use rocks as tools. When a sea otter dives to the ocean floor, it finds a clam and also picks up a rock. Then, floating on its back, it places the rock on its chest and uses it to crack open the clam’s shell. This behavior is not something they are born with perfectly; young otters learn it by watching their mothers. By using rocks, they can access food that would otherwise be too hard to eat. This increases their survival and reproductive success, especially in areas where other food sources are scarce. So, the rock-using behavior is a classic example of a behavioral adaptation.
❓ 问题 Using the example of the sea otter from the lecture, explain the concept of behavioral adaptation.
