📖 Reading Passage

Social loafing is a phenomenon in which individuals exert less effort when working in a group than when working alone. This reduction in motivation often occurs because individual contributions are less identifiable in a group setting, leading people to feel that their personal input is not crucial to the overall outcome. Social loafing can diminish group productivity and is more likely to occur in larger groups or when tasks are simple and repetitive. Understanding this concept is important for designing effective teamwork strategies.

🎧 Listening Lecture

Professor: Now, let me give you a classic example from a study. Researchers asked participants to pull a rope attached to a device that measured their pulling force. In one condition, participants pulled alone. In another condition, they pulled as part of a group of five, but they were blindfolded, so they couldn't see how hard others were pulling. The results were striking: when people thought they were pulling as part of a group, they pulled about 20% less force than when they pulled alone. Interestingly, when participants were blindfolded but believed they were pulling alone, they pulled as hard as they did in the solo condition. This shows that the mere presence of others, even without direct observation, led to reduced effort. The key factor was the perceived diffusion of responsibility—each person felt less accountable because their individual effort was hidden within the group.
❓ Question Question: Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of social loafing.
