In psychology, the concept of 'functional fixedness' refers to a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. This mental block prevents individuals from seeing alternative uses for familiar objects, thereby hindering problem-solving. When faced with a novel challenge, people often struggle because they cannot think beyond an object's standard function. Overcoming functional fixedness requires creative thinking and the ability to reframe the problem, allowing for unconventional solutions.

Professor: Today, let's discuss a classic experiment that illustrates functional fixedness. In the study, participants were given a candle, a box of tacks, and a book of matches. Their task was to attach the candle to a wall so that it could burn without dripping wax on the floor. Many participants tried to tack the candle directly to the wall or melt the wax to stick it, but these failed. The solution was to empty the tack box, tack it to the wall as a shelf, and place the candle inside it. However, participants often overlooked the box as a platform because they saw it only as a container for tacks. This demonstrates functional fixedness—they fixated on the box's typical role and couldn't see its alternative use as a support.
