📖 読解資料

In biology, animals often develop specialized behaviors to increase their chances of survival. One such behavior is 'mimicry,' where one species evolves to resemble another species in appearance or behavior. Mimicry can be protective, as when a harmless species imitates a dangerous one to deter predators, or aggressive, as when a predator imitates a harmless species to lure prey. This adaptation is a result of natural selection, where individuals with traits that improve survival are more likely to reproduce and pass on those traits.

Professor: Let's take the example of the scarlet kingsnake and the eastern coral snake. The coral snake is highly venomous, with bright red, yellow, and black bands. Predators quickly learn to avoid it. Now, the scarlet kingsnake is non-venomous, but it has a very similar pattern of red, yellow, and black bands. In fact, the bands are arranged in the same order—red touches yellow. This resemblance is not accidental; it's protective mimicry. Predators that have had a bad experience with the coral snake will also avoid the kingsnake, even though it's harmless. This increases the kingsnake's survival because it's less likely to be attacked. Over time, kingsnakes with more similar patterns to the coral snake survived better and reproduced, passing on those genes. So, the mimicry here is clearly a protective adaptation.
❓ 質問 Using the example from the lecture, explain the concept of protective mimicry and how it benefits the scarlet kingsnake.
