📖 เนื้อเรื่อง

The concept of 'learned helplessness' refers to a psychological phenomenon where an individual, after experiencing repeated failures or uncontrollable negative outcomes, begins to believe that their actions have no effect on the outcome. As a result, they stop trying to change their situation, even when opportunities for success become available. Learned helplessness was first identified in animal experiments but applies to human behavior as well, often leading to passivity and decreased motivation in academic, professional, or personal contexts.

🎧 การบรรยาย

Professor: Let me give you a real-world example. Consider a student named Sarah who struggled with math in elementary school. Despite her efforts, she consistently received poor grades and felt that no matter how hard she studied, she couldn't improve. By middle school, Sarah stopped trying altogether—she didn't do homework, didn't study for tests, and even told her parents, 'I'm just bad at math.' One year, she got a new teacher who offered extra help and simpler practice problems. The teacher encouraged her and provided a supportive environment. Initially, Sarah refused to engage, saying, 'Why bother? I'll just fail again.' However, the teacher insisted, and Sarah slowly began to attempt small problems. To her surprise, she solved them correctly. Over time, with continued success, her confidence grew, and she started studying regularly. Eventually, she passed her math class with a B. Sarah's initial refusal to try despite the new opportunity is a classic case of learned helplessness—she had generalized her past failures to all future possibilities. But once she experienced success, her helplessness diminished, showing that the belief is learned and can be unlearned.
